Four Tips when Shopping for Vintage Tables

When buying vintage furniture for your home, you must know what you are getting. Also, you must ensure the piece is worth the price. The furniture market today is filled with replicas; thus, you must understand what to look out for when buying vintage pieces. One of the most popular vintage items that people look for is vintage table.  A vintage table is at least 30-40 years old and it doesn’t have to be a one-of-a-kind piece. It needs to have a mix of new designs, different craftsmanship, and exotic wood.

Here are some pointers to keep in mind when buying vintage tables:

Invest in Rare Pieces

Make sure to do your homework and know what you are getting. Choose unique pieces that will truly elevate your design décor and complement a certain element of the project. Try to buy a piece that is no longer manufactured. Many designer pieces are replicated or licensed through other firms. The price difference between original and reproduction is quite different.

Examine the Condition

You will want to buy a preowned table in original or like-new condition. Take your time examining the table’s condition systematically. When shopping for vintage tables, check for structural integrity and look for areas of meaningful damage or loss. Also, examine the table for comfort. Check the legs and feet for damage or replacement. Keep in mind that even if you find a designer piece, it will not have the same value if it has irreparable cracks or a chip.

Assess the Refurbishment Cost

Gently used items can naturally show some wear. Surface structures and minor flaws are easy to be fixed.  However, think about the expense of a complete restoration in terms of dollar amount and the table’s integrity. Before you commit to a vintage table that requires significant refurbishing, realize the costs involved.

Trust your Instinct

When dealing with vintage pieces, trust your instinct. Your heart can guide you through the process. You will feel it if a piece of furniture speaks to you. You will want to purchase a piece that you love.  But, as trends tend to come and go, make sure to get a piece that speaks to you. When you find a vintage table that you love, act fast and on instinct. Usually, it will not be easy to find one again when you pass up. But, if you have reservations about a piece, try to ask the dealer if they can hold it for you for a day. This will allow you some time to make your final decision.
